Vinyl Vault: Alphonso Johnson, "Yesterday's Dreams"
This week’s Vinyl Vault will feature a 1976 album from bassist Alphonso Johnson entitled "Yesterday’s Dreams,” released on Epic Records. Johnson is probably best known for his work with Weather Report around this same time.
“Yesterday’s Dreams” features a host of well-known musicians, including, most notably for Colorado jazz fans, an appearance on one song by Dianne Reeves. Reeves was only 19 years old at the time this album was recorded. Also joining the festivities was Grover Washington, Jr., whose saxophone solos are quite prominent on several tunes. The album also marked the recording debut of Sheila Escovedo a/k/a Sheila E. Others included Patrice Rushen on keyboards, Lee Ritenour on guitar, Mike Clark from the Headhunters on drums, Jon Lucien on vocals on one tune, and Frank Zappa alumni Ian Underwood, Ruth Underwood, and Chester Thompson.
Check out the funk and R&B influences on “Yesterday’s Dreams” on the Vinyl Vault with Geoff Anderson, this Tuesday, August 19, at 8:30 p.m. on KUVO JAZZ.
