Vinyl Vault: Andreas Vollenweider, "Caverna Magica"

Tonight, on the Vinyl Vault, we’ll hear from Swiss harpist Andreas Vollenweider and his 1983 album on CBS Records, “Caverna Magica.” Vollenweider was joined on the album by Pedro Haldemann on “rhytmanatomic, acousticolors and unidentified fine-drawn overcast,” which boils down to various percussion instruments. Walter Keiser played drums, Jon Otis was on additional percussion and Corina Curschellas added some vocals. The album also features cave sound effects.

Over the years, Vollenweider has worked with artists as diverse as Bobby McFerrin, Carley Simon, Luciano Pavarotti, Milton Nascimento, Abdullah Ibrahim and others. On “Caverna Magica,” Vollenweider played an electro-acoustic harp which he modified to suit his individual style.

Vollenweider, now 71, remains active having released an album in 2022. This summer and fall, he will tour Europe, performing the music from “Caverna Magica.”

Check out Andreas Vollenweider's harp-based music on the next Vinyl Vault with Geoff Anderson on Tuesday, May 13 at 8:30 p.m. on KUVO JAZZ.
