Vinyl Vault: Brittany Davis, "Black Thunder"

Geoff Anderson has been a KUVO JAZZ volunteer since 1988
Brittany Davis

The Vinyl Vault will feature a brand new album from Brittany Davis entitled "Black Thunder.” Released on June 13, 2025, on Loosegroove Records, it’s a two-record set with nine songs and eight interludes entitled "Ancestors Parts 1 to VIII.”

Davis, currently residing in Seattle, recorded the album in only two days with the help of Evan Flory-Barnes on bass and D’Vonne on drums and percussion. Davis sang and played piano and Fender Rhodes. The music was largely improvised during the recording sessions, with Davis composing all the lyrics.

Blind since birth, Davis sees the world through sound and music. She’s been compared to Nina Simone and Abby Lincoln. The music digs deep grooves behind Davis’s sometimes spoken-word, sometimes melodic vocals.

Loosegroove Records is a project of Stone Gossard of the band Pearl Jam, and “Black Thunder” was produced by Josh Evans, Pearl Jam’s producer.

Join host Geoff Anderson on Tuesday, September 23, at 8:30 p.m. for some fresh vinyl on the Vinyl Vault on KUVO JAZZ.
