Vinyl Vault: John Coltrane, "On A Misty Night"
The Vinyl Vault goes back to 1956 for some classic music from John Coltrane from his days on the Prestige Record Label. Coltrane released two albums on Prestige in 1956, “Tenor Conclave” and “Mating Call,” although the latter was originally released under Tadd Dameron’s name. In 1978, Prestige reissued both albums together as a double album under the name “On A Misty Night.” Tuesday night, we’ll hear tracks from both.
“Tenor Conclave” featured four tenor sax players. In addition to Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Zoot Sims, and Al Cohn all played tenor. Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Art Taylor rounded out that band on piano, bass, and drums.
“Mating Call” featured Dameron on piano, John Simmons on bass and Philly Joe Jones joined Coltrane on that session.
Join Geoff Anderon on Tuesday, June 9, at 8:30 p.m. for the next Vinyl Vault on KUVO JAZZ.
