Vinyl Vault: Marvin Stamm, "Machinations"

On the next Vinyl Vault, we’ll hear some tracks from a 1968 album on the Verve record label from trumpeter Mavin Stamm entitled "Machinations.” It’s a big band album which was arranged and conducted by Johnny Carisi.

Carisi assembled a band of the best New York jazz musicians at the time. Stamm was, of course, the featured soloist, but several other musicians made a big impact on the album including Dick Hyman on piano, Joe Beck on guitar, Urbie Green on trombone, and Dick Spencer, Monte Lewis, and George Young on saxophones.

Marvin Stamm, now 85, has had a long and storied career. For decades he has been widely considered to be one of the top trumpeters in jazz. Leonard Feather praised him as a musician whose technical skill is used as a means to a stimulating end. Early in his career, he played in the bands of Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, and Thad Jones/Mel Lewis. More recently, he’s been with the Bob Mintzer big band, Louie Bellson’s big band, and Maria Schnieder’s group in addition to working in scores of smaller ensembles.

“Machinations” was Stamm’s first album under his own name and you can hear it this Tuesday, February 25 at 8:30 p.m. on the Vinyl Vault with Geoff Anderson, only on KUVO JAZZ.
