Vinyl Vault: Mike Marshall, Darol Anger, "Chiaroscuro"

We’ll have plenty of strings on the Vinyl Vault, but only a few of those strings will be violins. Other string instruments we’ll hear include mandolin, mandocello, guitar, bass, classical guitar, viola and cello. The album is entitled "Chiaroscuro” and is by Mike Marshall and Darol Anger. The album was released in 1985 on Windham Hill Records.

Marshall and Anger are veterans of David Grisman’s band from way back in the 20th century. They were joined on this album by Michael Manring on electric fretless bass and synthesizer, Todd Phillips on string bass, Andy Narell on steel drums, George Marsh on triangle and Barbara Higbie on synthesizer.

Most of the tunes on the album are originals by the band leaders and feature extensive arrangements. But, of course, the composers left plenty of room for improvisation, which is good because Marshall and Anger are two of the best in the business. It’s an album of acoustic swinging jazz with some hints of bluegrass.

Join Geoff Anderson on Tuesday, May 20, at 8:30 p.m. for "Chiaroscuro" on the next Vinyl Vault, only on KUVO JAZZ.
