Vinyl Vault — Toshiko Akiyoshi Lew Tabackin Big Band, “Tales of a Courtesan”

Some intricate and swinging big band music is on tap for the next Vinyl Vault. We’ll hear some tracks from “Tales of a Courtesan,” a 1976 RCA release by the Toshiko Akiyoshi Lew Tabackin Big Band.

Akiyoshi and Tabackin formed the 16-piece band in 1973 in Los Angeles. It quickly became known for Akiyoshi’s creative and exciting compositions and arrangements. Tabackin was consistently a featured soloist in the band which also featured other top-flight soloists. All of those attributes were on full display in “Tales of a Courtesan.”

The group disbanded in 2003, but the leaders are still with us. Akiyoshi is 95 years old and Tabackin is 84.

Check out this unique big band sound on the Vinyl Vault with Geoff Anderson, on Tuesday, January 28 at 8:30 p.m. on KUVO JAZZ.
