KUVO Jazz 40th Anniversary

Our Music

40 Years of Music

It started with smooth jazz, funky blues, salsa, to the roots of Mexican folk, morphing into Tejano, Norteño and Southwestern beats. Jazz became front and center with a soulful improvisation of straight-ahead, bebop, swing jazz, and cool jazz. That spirit ignited Latin jazz, fusing Afro-Cuban rhythms in with jazz. Add in blues, rhythm and blues, and soul, the music that tells the stories of resilience to the sway of samba where Afro-Brazilian beats celebrate. Traditional Latin sounds, and a new jazz sounds! Together, they tell a story of culture and creativity. It’s a movement that is essentially what KUVO JAZZ is all about.

Building the KUVO Sound

Carlos Lando reflects on 40 years of music: KUVO's always been what we call a “split-format” station. In the very beginning (1985) KUVO featured traditional Latino programming on the weekend - music from Central and South America – the original music – a real folkloric sound.
