Jazz News: Colorado Music Hall downtown; FlyLo & Reggie Watts “psychedelic;” RIP Lillian Boutte

This is Jazz News, a look at what’s news in jazz, music, and the arts.

In case you missed it, the Colorado Music Hall of Fame has a new location at the Colorado Convention Center, right by the Bellco Theatre lobby. After years at the Red Rocks Trading Post, the new downtown location offers all that cool memorabilia – Lannie Garrett’s fancy hat from her Clocktower days, the John Denver statue, Glenn Miller’s original 78 rpm platter, and    Don’t forget to put the Colorado Music Hall of Fame on your sights to see for out of town visitors, so folks remember that that Colorado stands for mountains AND music. (Fun fact: KUVO and Carlos Lando are inductees in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame!) (SOURCE: Colorado Music Hall of Fame)

This week, Denver is the center of the psychedelic universe. I’m not talking about the portals to other dimensions, dude. I’m talking about Psychedelic Science 2025 – the world’s largest conference on psychedelics, including scientific papers, entrepreneurs, professional athletes, policy makers like Governor Polis, and a concert Tuesday night at the Mission Ballroom featuring Flying Lotus and Reggie Watts. We just learned of the passing of New Orleans jazz icon Lillian Boutte. She passed over to the other side on May 23 at age 75. One of her most famous projects was her international tour with the cast of One Mo’ Time in 1979. Jazzwise.com reported that back in the 1990s, she was appointed the Crescent City’s official Jazz Ambassador, from where she toured the world, singing and leading jazz workshops for children.

Ms. Boutte spoke at Boulder’s Conference on World Affairs in 2015, and I’ve been sharing a recording of her laughter and soul ever since.

"Enjoy life. Don't let anybody stop you. And if you don't know the keys, listen to it and learn the music and go to somebody and say, ‘Yeah, I'm singing now,’ because you might be some of those high people that came in with a good heart and give us some more good music in our life. And in the world. Yeah? So share it. Care it and dance with it. Yeah? So I’m not gonna say more because my momma say I talk too much.”
