Jazz News: UK non-profit and film “Grassroots Jazz;” All Ages Jazz Jam moves to Aurora; Booth and Sencalar join CU-Boulder faculty

This is Jazz News, a look at what’s news in jazz, music, and the arts.

When it comes to the health and well-being of jazz, we’re always looking for ideas and examples of what’s working to keep this music playing. A new documentary from across the pond tells the story of the nationwide network of volunteer-run venues that were on the brink of closure, until jazz guitarist Nigel Price started a non-profit to support these small clubs. He also produced a documentary on the ongoing quest to keep clubs open and musicians touring. The project is called “Grassroots Jazz,” and the two-part video is available on YouTube. Alto saxophonist Daryl Gott has moved his All Ages Jazz Jam Session from the Stanley Marketplace to Cerebral Brewing on East Colfax and Del Mar Circle in the Aurora Cultural Arts District. Gott says it’s vital for musicians “to play with people of all backgrounds and experience levels, and in front of an audience.” And that opportunity is especially hard to find for young musicians. The all-ages jam is on the last Sunday afternoon of each month.

And on the formal education scene:

Pianist-composer-publisher Annie Booth has taken her talents to the foothills of Boulder, joining the faculty as Assistant Professor for the Thompson Jazz Studies program at the CU - Boulder College of Music.

Trombonist Altin Sencalar also joins the CU Boulder faculty as Assistant Teaching Professor of Jazz Studies. (SOURCE: Colorado Edu Music Faculty
