Kaleta & Super Yamba Band on Global Soul Lounge

As the age old saying goes, there’s always a first time for everything. On Saturday, May 10, we had the pleasure of welcoming our first special guest to the Global Soul Lounge, none other than Afrobeat icon Kaleta.

Born in Porto Novo, Benin, the renowned singer, songwriter, producer, guitarist, and percussionist Leon “Kaleta” Ligan-Majekodunmi, started his musical journey in Lagos, Nigeria, in the 1970s and still continues today from his new home base in New York City. 

Kaleta’s trajectory as an artist is nothing short of astronomical, it’s as if he was bound for greatness from the moment he first touched a musical instrument. In our interview, we talked about his five decades as a professional musician. Covering his origins as a professional musician with legendary Juju and World music singer King Sunny Ade, his run as a frontman in Fela Kuti’s legendary Egypt 80 ensemble, and his current musical projects with Sumper Yamba Band and DJ Bosq.
