Live & Local: Ms. Destiny at Center for CO Women's History

When I first visited The Center for Colorado of Women’s History at the end of March, they were in between exhibitions – their yearlong exhibition Rumors of Bloomers, exploring undergarments through history, was coming down. Mannequin arms were being removed to carefully slide delicate garments off displays, carefully folded, to then be packed away and stored at the History Colorado archives.

They were making way for a whole other set of historic items to be displayed as part of the then-upcoming Ms. Destiny exhibition. I spoke with Guest Services Specialist Sydney Epstein, who was part of the team handling the antique articles of clothing and Guest Services, Front Desk, and Volunteer Coordinator Margaux Miller about this process and some of the big cultural shifts that have happened in the historic Byers-Evans Home that houses The Center for Colorado of Women’s History.

Ms. Destiny, currently on display at The Center for Colorado Women’s History now through March 2026, asks the question "What would you do to control your own destiny?" Throughout history, Colorado women have forged opportunity out of scarcity as they created lives they desired. The Center for Colorado Women's History newest exhibition highlights the stories of seven unique and resilient Colorado women who took fate into their hands, overcame barriers, and defined their realities. I returned to The Center for Colorado Women’s History in April when Ms. Destiny was attracting its first museum goers and spoke with Susan Fries, Director, and Sydney Epstein about the impact these women had on CO and their unique superhero depictions created just for this exhibition.
