Vinyl Vault: Caravan, "Waterloo Lily"
The Vinyl Vault explores the close relationship between early 1970s jazz fusion and progressive rock when we feature a 1972 album from the British band Caravan entitled “Waterloo Lily.” Caravan was part of what was known as the Canterbury sound arising in southern England around this time. Other bands and musicians in the Canterbury area included Soft Machine, Hatfield and the North, Robert Wyatt, and others.
Caravan was formed in 1968 and is still active. During that time, the band has released over 30 albums. “Waterloo Lily” is probably the band’s jazziest album, probably owing in part to the involvement of keyboard player Steve Miller (not the American guitarist). This was the only album Miller appeared on. The album features two extended suites that allow the band members to stretch out for some extended improvisations.
Join host Geoff Anderson on Tuesday, April 15 at 8:30 p.m. for the next Vinyl Vault and a bit of the Canterbury sound, only on KUVO JAZZ.
