Vinyl Vault: Ganavya, "Daughter of a Temple"
Indian-raised vocalist Ganavya recently appeared at the Boulder Theater as part of the Denver Jazz Fest. If you missed Ganavya, you’ll have another chance to hear her music on the next Vinyl Vault when we feature her 2024 album “Daughter of a Temple.”
The album was recorded in Houston, Texas in 2022 when Ganavya brought together many jazz artists for a wide-ranging collaboration. Featured artists on the album include Vijay Iyer, Shabaka Hutchings, Immanuel Wilkins, and many others.
Ganavya’s music is a mix of Indian classical music with Western influences, so that guitars and pianos interact with sitars and tablas. Ganavya’s spiritually inspired vocals float above the instruments in an ethereal, meditative fashion. The music on the albums drew much inspiration from both John and Alice Coltrane. Indeed, the four-part “A Love Supreme” comprises most of side two.
Check out Ganavya with host Geoff Anderson on the next Vinyl Vault, on Tuesday, April 22 at 8:30 p.m. on KUVO/kuvo.org.
