interview with Fathima Dickerson

Five stars on Google!  Four out of five stars on Yelp.com.  Five stars out of five on UrbanSpoon.com.  The Dickerson family has run the Welton Street Cafe (2736 Welton St., Denver, 80205) for most of Fathima Dickerson’s 27 years.  She visited “First Take with Lando and Chavis” to tell a few stories from their acclaimed family soul food restaurant.

“Both my mom and my dad still play a big role in the restaurant,” says the younger Dickerson, but she and her brother handle most of day-to-day operations of the lunch and dinner spot.  ”The catfish and fried chicken dinners sell out of control.  Our pates (island style fried pastries) are popular because no one makes pates.”

“We’re a little short staffed,” says Dickerson, and she’s looking to bring in some waitpersons who enjoy the people side of the business.  ”I like to greet my customers right away.  Constantly check on them.  I like that our restaurant is personal.  I know people by name.   I try to remember their orders.  It’s welcoming.”
