“I’m one that will cause people to scratch their heads in wonderment in search of their hollow hearts and look in their souls and wonder, Where did he come from? What is he?”

Just who was Sun Ra?  The most mystical and far-out of jazz musicians. The father of AfroFuturism that gave birth to such disparate acts as George Clinton, Lee Scratch Perry, and even Kamasi Washington. He could write like Ellington, swing like Basie, solo like the best stride pianists, pioneered electronic music in the 50s, and kept a band together for decades.

We’ll try to answer the question on Sunday, January 19 from 5-6pm only on KUVO Jazz and The Jazz River with Matthew Goldwasser.
