Winter of Reading

Denver Public Library presents Winter of Reading, a reading challenge that encourages adults to read and complete library-related activities for prizes. You’re invited to explore other library services, such as virtual events, classes and electronic resources like eBooks, movies, and music. The program starts January 2 – February 28, you must be 17+ to participate. Prizes are limited to one per customer, while supplies last.

There are two ways to participate. There is an online option—create your Beanstack account and start earning your badges by completing any five activities before February 28. Or, if you prefer the classic paper brochure, you can request Winter of Reading challenge brochures at any branch during curbside hours. For quick and convenient prize pick up, we encourage you to make a curbside appointment, please enter “Winter of Reading Prize Pick Up” in the special notes field. You can also call the location to set up a pick up time or 720-865-1111.

Winter of Reading Trivia Walk
January 11 – February 28—Enjoy the brisk winter air and discover a new book! Walk around Cranmer Park’s sundial and see if you can find all 10 featured books from Ross-Cherry Creek Branch. Bonus: answer the trivia question via the QR code or by calling us and be entered to win library swag.

Saturday Matinee: Walter Chaw and Rian Johnson Talk Under the Skin, 2013
Saturday, Jan. 2, 11:30 am- 12:30 pm—Join film critic Walter Chaw and director, producer, and screenwriter Rian Johnson (dir. Knives Out, dir. Star Wars: The Last Jedi, dir. Looper) to talk about this film. Under The Skin is free to watch on the streaming service Kanopy which you can subscribe to using your library card. Registration required to receive Zoom link and password, and the recommended filmography list afterwards.

Food Lover’s Book Club: In Bibi’s Kitchen
Wednesday, Jan. 6, 6-7 pm—Start the year off with Amanda Faison and a discussion of In Bibi’s Kitchen: The Recipes and Stories of Grandmothers from the Eight African Countries that Touch the Indian Ocean by Hawa Hassan with Julia Turshen.

Denver Cinema Club Presents “Beaches of Agnès” (2009) with John Anzalone
Sunday,  Jan. 10, 1:30-3 pm—Film professor John Anzalone hosts this insightful discussion and scene analysis of Beaches of Agnès, a personal documentary by the legendary filmmaker herself, Agnès Varda. Getting Started with eBooks
Wednesdays, Jan. 13 & 27, 10:30-11:30 am—Learn how to access library eBooks, audiobooks and video with your library card. Bring your own smartphone, tablet, or laptop, or explore the eBooks website using your personal computer. Join online.

Denver Reflective Storytelling Workshop
Friday, Jan. 15, 3-4:15 pm—Join us in a supportive, online space facilitated by StoryCenter that will draw on experience with trauma-informed methods to help participants tell and share their personal stories.

Battle of the Books with Author Jim Mustich
Saturday, Jan. 16, 5-6 pm—Join James Mustich, author of 1,000 Books to Read Before You Die, for an evening for book lovers featuring five local luminaries who will battle to advocate for their favorite books, vying for the hearts and minds of the audience members (you!).
