“I Don’t fit into a particular category. I tried for years to fit into what everybody else was doing and became completely frustrated. I thought there was something wrong with me, but actually there was something right. The whole point is to find your own road and not follow everybody else like some fashion monkey—and to feel lucky that your music doesn’t sound the same every time your play it.”—Taj Mahal

Whether is it Rural and Electric blues, Calypso, Reggae, Norteño, Hindustani, West African, Hawaiian, Jazz, or R& B, they all are a part of the road Taj has travelled in his almost 60 years in music. Along the way, he earned 3 Grammys, wrote soundtracks and acted in films, recorded children’s albums, and stage plays. From the Pointer Sisters, to The Cultural Music Club of Zanzibar, from David Murray and Olu Dara to Malian kora master Toumani Diabate, Taj has collaborated with a wonderfully diverse cross-section of artists and always, always stayed true to himself.

Tune in to The Jazz River on Sunday, March 7, from 5-6 pm to travel The World According to Taj. Only on KUVO JAZZ.
