KUVO’s High School / Collegiate Performance Series kicks off 2023 with the Denver East High School 5th Hour Jazz Combo. The band director is noted saxophonist-composer Keith Oxman.

The Denver East High School Music Program has the distinction of being a member of the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, inducted in 2017. Denver East’s world-class musical alumni include Paul Whiteman, beloved cornetist-educator Ron Miles, Bill Frisell, members of Earth, Wind and Fire, Purnell Steen, and many others. The 5th Hour Jazz Combo has played at the Vail Jazz Festival and at Dazzle at Baur’s over the years.

There are a total of 14 players; Ellie Goldstein on clarinet, Elijah Lindstrom on trumpet, Jon Lindenmuth on alto sax, Nathan Vogel on tenor sax, Tyler Boehm on baritone sax, Sam Cozart on trombone, Sarah Asres on guitar, Ben Brown on guitar, Jasper Kurtz on guitar (they play at the same time), Brayden Winters on piano, Madeleine Senger on piano (they also play at the same time), Kira Matthews on electric bass, Jonathan Sykes on drums, Bennett Miller on drums (they alternate).

Band director Keith Oxman (profiled earlier on KUVO.org), has more than a dozen CDs under his own name. In addition to his work on two Jazz WORMS records (with Andy Weyl on piano, Keith Oxman on sax, Paul Romaine on drums, Ron Miles on cornet/trumpet, and Mark Simon on bass), he has recording and performance credits with Art Blakey, Paquito D’Rivera, Dave Liebman, Charles McPherson, Buddy Rich and many more!
