Celebrate the music of composer/bassist Charles Mingus with the six-time Grammy-nominated Mingus Big Band featuring 14 of today’s finest jazz musicians.

KUVO Presents Mingus Big Band on Thursday, April 6 at 7:30 PM at the Newman Center for Performing Arts

Mingus Big Band can be heard in prestigious venues around the world in addition to eleven recordings to its credit. One of the most important figures in twentieth-century American music, Charles Mingus was a virtuoso bass player, accomplished pianist, bandleader, and composer. He recorded over a hundred albums and wrote over three hundred scores. One of the greatest musicians of our time, Mingus played with the greatest musicians of our time – Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Art Tatum, Duke Ellington, and many others. Celebrate the centennial of Mingus’s birth with a performance not soon to forget.

“For sheer melodic and rhythmic and structural originality, his compositions may equal anything written in western music in the twentieth century.” – The New Yorker

“The hippest big band in the universe – robust, earthy, sanctified.” – Time Out New York
