Before Brian Auger formed the Oblivion Express, he recorded several albums in the 1960s with British vocalist Julie Driscoll. After those albums with Auger’s band Trinity, the two went their separate ways. Then, in 1978, they got back together to record “Encore,” which was released on Warner Brothers Records. By then, Driscoll had married avant-garde pianist, and past member of King Crimson, Keith Tippetts whose name she took.

On Encore, Auger’s keyboard playing, particularly the Hammond B-3, conjured images of the Oblivion Express, but Tippetts’ bluesy and powerful soul-infused singing added another dimension. The band was rounded out by David McDaniels on bass, George Doering on guitars, and Dave Crigger on drums.

The song selection was mostly covers, including two by Al Jarreau as well as tunes by Jack Bruce, Steve Winwood, Milton Nascimento and a couple penned by Auger.

Check out Encore with Geoff Anderson on the Vinyl Vault on Tuesday, May 30 at 8:30 pm on KUVO JAZZ.
