Vinyl Vault — Freddie Roach, “Brown Sugar”

We’ll have some soulful organ next time on the Vinyl Vault when we spin “Brown Sugar,” a 1964 Blue Note album from organist Freddie Roach. This was Roach’s fourth album and he burned through a six song set not only drawing deep from the soul side but also ladling on plenty of blues and R&B.

Roach was joined on the session by tenor sax man Joe Henderson who contributed some great bluesy solos proving that he could comfortably live in Roach’s idiom as well as in the hard bop camp. The quartet was rounded out by Eddie Wright on guitar and Clarance Johnson on drums.

Roach wrote the title track, but the rest of the tunes were covers including “The Right Time,” sometimes known as “The Nighttime is the Right Time,” popularized by Ray Charles. The others aren’t quite as well-known but they all provided a solid foundation for Roach’s incendiary groove and blistering solos.
