Super Sonido with La Molly: Gipsy Kings
For more than four decades, the Gipsy Kings have brought the vibrant sounds of flamenco and Catalan gipsy culture to audiences around the world. With more than 25 million albums sold, a Grammy Award, and countless sold-out tours, the group continues to evolve while staying rooted in the traditions that first shaped their sound on the streets of Arles, France.
Now the band, led by founder and virtuoso guitarist Tonino Baliardo, returns with Historia, a new album arriving May 15 via Cooking Vinyl. The title track and latest single, “Historia,” captures the unmistakable spirit that has defined the group for generations: joyful rhythms, passionate vocals, jazzy piano flourishes, and Baliardo’s signature guitar work. The song channels the same infectious energy heard in classics like Bamboléo and Djobi, Djoba, while reflecting the band’s ever-expanding musical influences.
For Baliardo, Historia is deeply personal. Inspired by decades of traveling and performing around the world, the album blends rhumba, pop, dance, and jazz with the fiery heart of flamenco. “My music has no borders,” Baliardo says. “I wanted to create an album that reflects all the influences I’ve experienced throughout my life.”
Family also plays a central role in the project. Baliardo collaborated with his sons, Cosso and Mikael, while his grandson Milan even contributed the title for the song “Big Bang.” Another track, “Cielo,” honors the memory of Baliardo’s brother Paco, one of the original Gipsy Kings.
The album promises a celebration of the band’s past, present, and global musical journey.
