Legacy

Our Story

That a community radio station in a major market would survive with a largely consistent format over 40 years is so remarkable, one wonders how it all got started. Mostly from the steel-trap mind of founding CEO Florence Hernández-Ramos. We’re happy to share the details of the effort to put KUVO JAZZ on the air in 1985. Non-profit and organizational nerds will probe the mechanics of board governance and legal strategy. Entrepreneurs will marvel at the bold and tireless creativity that the early team employed to raise the first $150,000 budget to get on the air – and all with a Chicano/Latino/bi-lingual emphasis.

Here are all the dirty details.

Our Story

Humming Right Along….Not

Although KUVO marks its anniversary on August 29 of 1985, efforts to make the station a reality began years before. 89.3 FM has always been licensed to Denver Educational Broadcasting but the call letters from 1978 to 1983 were Granfalloon/KHUM.
Our Story

No Hablo Español

KUVO was to be a Spanish-language radio station but according to a 1983 survey, the majority of the state’s Latinos had lived in the Denver metro area for many generations, far from the border with Mexico, and they did not speak Spanish.
Our Story

Now We Shall Lead

Granfalloon/KHUM turned control of 89.3 FM to KUVO in April 1983 by changing the composition of the Board of Directors of Denver Educational Broadcasting (DEB).
