Linda Briceño & Myles Sloniker – El Sistema Colorado Fundraiser

Latin Grammy-nominee for 2014’s Best New Artist and Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, Linda Briceño will headline a benefit performance for El Sistema Colorado at Denver’s top jazz club, Dazzle Jazz.

El Sistema Colorado’s mission is to empower children by providing an intensive music program that teaches the importance of teamwork, promotes self-confidence and instills the value of social responsibility. It currently serves nearly 600 low-income students – kindergarten through 12th grade – during and after-school in three Denver Public Schools, cultivating academic success as well as social and emotional development.

“60 Minutes” featured El Sistema, established in Venezuela over 40 years ago by Dr. Abreu. El Sistema serves more than 400,000 youth through orchestras and choirs in Venezuela and is now a worldwide phenomenon. Linda Briceño, 28, grew up in the El Sistema music education system in her native Venezuela, and is thrilled at the opportunity to support the movement in Denver. Briceño’s connection with El Sistema is profound; she and her father initiated “Simón Bolívar Big Band Jazz” in 2007, under the direction of El Sistema founder Dr. José Antonio Abreu. Briceño has captured international attention as a soloist, big band director and composer. She was the first Venezuelan woman to play with the renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Briceño will be joined by Colorado-born bassist Myles Sloniker, also a well-established musician in New York. The concert will feature cameos by his father, pianist Mark Sloniker, flutist Joe Anderies, and young El Sistema Colorado musicians. For more info, contact Alissa Kotranza.
