Black History Month exhibition: Ron Hicks, impressionist

Marking Black History Month, the annual New Hope Baptist Church Art Exhibition  features the work of 18 artists, including photography, abstract, sculpture, representational, jewelry and more.  The exhibit, titled “Expressing Freedom through Freedom of Expression,” runs Feb. 5 – 28, 2016.

“I consider myself a storyteller,” said Denver-based visual artist Ron Hicks, who is curating the exhibition with Rochelle Johnson, also an artist. “I like to leave my work open-ended.  If you ask me during a show ‘what is this painting about,’  I will probably say, ‘what do you think it’s about.'”

In the audio below, Hicks explains how he discovered his artistic gift and how he developed his style.

The opening reception on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016 (6:00 – 9:00 p.m.) features music, food, and a live sculptor creating a work at the event.
