Sometimes even the most delicious entree can be improved by adding another ingredient. For years the Montgomery-Hermann ensemble has been entertaining audiences along the Front Range as well as in other destinations around the world, their On the Brink recording was well received and garnered numerous spins both here in Colorado and nationally. Not satisfied sitting on their laurels, trumpeter Bob Montgomery and trombonist Al Hermann expanded their swingin’ sound by adding Josh Quinlan, a saxophonist of note who is also an instructor of jazz studies at UC-Boulder. The debut of the Montgomery-Hermann-Quinlan Sextet, Hear, Here is an exquisite collection of 9 songs, as we used to say way back in the day, “it’s all killer-diller, no filler”.  The horns are accompanied by the formidable rhythm section of Dave Hanson, Ken Walker and Todd Reid, all leaders of their own bands.

Hear, Here released on the Summit Records label features 3 originals and 6 standards, feel free to hit random play on your listening device and I guarantee no matter what song is selected you won’t be disappointed.  The veteran co-leaders Bob and Al made a shrewd choice to add Josh to the front line as he brings a newer feel to the mix that blends perfectly with the always in the pocket playing of the group. An added bonus comes along with this recording, it’s the debut of KUVO’s own Erik Troe as a writer of liner notes, make sure you read Erik’s captivating writing about the CD. I am very happy to have made Hear, Here our May CD of the month, I am also very proud to know that as this recording makes it way around the world to jazz music outlets and jazz fans, they will take notice that it’s from Colorado perhaps sparking curiosity to discover other artists and recordings from the “Centennial State” thanks to The Montgomery-Hermann-Quinlan Sextet’s Hear, Here.
