This week on the Vinyl Vault, it’s a Duke Ellington album KUVO doesn’t have! Yes, strange, but true, it’s a hole in the KUVO library, but the Vinyl Vault has it and we’ll hear it tonight at 8:30 pm.

“The Duke Ellington Small Bands; The Intimacy of the Blues” was recorded in 1967 and 1970 and first released in 1986.. And, although the bands were “small,” they still included many of the stars from the Ellington big band: Johnny Hodges, Cat Anderson, Paul Gonsalves and more. We’ll even hear a track with Ellington on piano and Will Bill Davis on organ, plus two bass players. It’s all top drawer stuff and you won’t want to miss it.

The Vinyl Vault airs on Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. during The Night Beat (8-10 p.m.) on Jazz 89 KUVO and kuvo.org.

Geoff Anderson has reached the 25-year mark as a KUVO/KVJZ volunteer. For almost all that time he has been on the air Tuesday evenings. Geoff started in public radio in 1976 at KCSU in Fort Collins. After taking a time out from radio to attend law school and start a legal career, Geoff dove back into jazz radio by volunteering at the then fairly new KUVO in 1988.
