Tune in to New Music Monday with Arturo Gomez on Monday, July 4 at noon when he highlights music from Michael Carvin Experience, Adam Shulman, and Julius Rodriguez.

Michael Carvin Experience: “art of the trio:
The veteran and versatile Michael Carvin is a drummer of exceptional talent, moreover, he has become perhaps the leading educator of the drums in the world proven by the ant of students from around the world seeking him out as their instructor. Since joining Freddie Hubbard’s band in 1973, Carvin has toured with jazz’s greatest names and has appeared on over 250 recordings. Originally from Houston, Michael has been an NYC resident since around 1980. Due to his hectic schedule as a drum teacher, Michael has not recorded since 2014, now, our long wait is over! Michael gives us 8 standards he reimagined and arranged with Lenny Hartly-piano and Sezin Ahmet Turkmenoglu-bass, 2 young men under his tutelage.

Adam Shulman: “Just the Contrafacts”
The pandemic had a positive side for many artists, their isolation afforded them an opportunity to hone their skills and add new colors to their palette. Pianist Adam Shulman seized the opportunity to write new melodies over the chord structures of many standards. When the opportunity arose to return to the recording studio Adam took his new compositions to share with his accompanists, Peter Washington-bass, Billy Drummond-drums Jeremy Pelt-trumpet, Cory Weeds-alto and Grant Stewart-tenor, an all-star ensemble of leaders in their own right.

Julius Rodriguez: “Let Sound Tell All”
The multi-instrumentalist Julius was a child prodigy entering the Manhattan School of Music at age 12. He grew up in the NYC suburb of White Plains with a jazz aficionado father who exposed him to the jazz greats as an adolescent as well as the music of his Haitian heritage. Rodriguez uses his alias Orange Julius when recording with hip hop and R&B artists but at only 23 has already performed and recorded with some of the most formidable names in today’s jazz world, Jazzmeia Horn, Roy Hargrove, Wynton Marsalis, and others. There’s no doubt that Rodriguez will be one of the leaders in the new sounds of jazz heading into the future.

Every Monday for the past 19 years starting at Noon, I debut the latest arrivals to the KUVO Jazz library, many of them are debuted ahead of their official release date. In addition to the music comments, I’ll provide a few tidbits about the artist in particular if it’s a new or up-and-coming artist.
