Imagine that you are 73 years old and your dentist recommends that your rapidly deteriorating dental condition is going to require either a denture or a series of dental implants.

Given those options, if you’re a writer, a humorist and an observer of life like Daniel Klein, you opt instead for a trip to the Greek island of Hydra in hopes of enjoying life.

You also decide to bring along a cache of books on philosophy.  One book in the collection is paramount to the adventure itself – a book by the great Greek philosopher Epicurus in which the author asks, “How does one make the very most of one’s life?”

In his book “Travels with Epicurus – A Journey to a Greek Island in Search of a Fulfilled Life,” Klein addresses the question of how one deals with making the best of life as they grow old.  He delves into the root of the question by observing the behavior of the inhabitants of his chosen Greek island, and learns that the locals seem – to a man and a woman – quite content with the issue of aging.
