How many universities can say that they have their very own mariachi band? Yours can!

Founded in 2013, Mariachi Los Correcaminos – or “the Roadrunners” – was created by a small group of Adams City High School alumni who united as students at MSU Denver over their love of mariachi.

“We had been involved with mariachi in high school and decided to do it when we got to MSU Denver so we formed a club,” said Isahar Mendez, a music education major who serves as president of Mariachi Los Correcaminos and plays violin with the group. “We have a large population of people from other cultures here at MSU Denver – and on the Auraria Campus in general – as well as a large Latino population. It’s important to represent that in our music and share it with other people as well.” Miles Justice, vocalist and guitarrón player, found his true passion playing mariachi music. “Having a mariachi class being provided by Metro is a big step for  the university. It’s been a pleasure seeing all the hard work that Isahar Mendez- Flores has been doing to get the mariachi program at the school where it is today,” Justice said. Students like Justice hope Mariachi Ensemble becomes “the best academic mariachi [class] in the nation.” more
