This Saturday marks the 15th anniversary of the Cesar Chavez March in Denver.  Ramon Del Castillo from the Cesar Chavez Peace and Justice Committee of Denver called in to the “First Take with Lando and Chavis” morning show to discuss Chavez’s legacy, and this year’s honorees.

“We keep people motivated throughout the year, and we try to get into schools to educate youth about the work Cesar Chavez has done,” said Del Castillo.

The Committee is presenting four Leadership Awards this year.  Recipients include Nancy Hernandez, an education worker helping students pursue higher education.  New for 2016, the “Anciana” awardee is Priscilla Falcon, “a long time activist, author and political scientist,” currently the chair of the Mexican-American Studies Department at the University of Northern Colorado.  Other awardees are Jesse Ramirez and Brother Jeff’s Cultural Center.

“We have the right to choose our own heroes,” said Del Castillo.

Music on this feature includes Daniel Valdez, “Brown-Eyed Children of the Sun,” from the CD Mestizo.
