DJ Williams Talks About Newest Album on KUVO Ahead of his Show in Denver

DJ Williams is a guitarist, songwriter, and producer known for his dynamic stage presence and eclectic musical style. Premier Guitar hails him as “… a monster… an inventive, effective, and ear-catching soloist, armed with a warm tone and superior chops.” He carved a name for himself in the touring circuit as the lead guitarist for Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe for the past twelve years before stepping away in 2023. In our conversation on KUVO’s The Morning Set, he lovingly referred to his time playing with this band as the Tiny University since it allowed him to play with so many experienced musical heroes. In his career, he has shared the stage with music legends such as John Legend, Dave Matthews Band, George Clinton, John Oates, Warren Haynes, Ivan Neville, Big Daddy Kane, and Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings just to name a few. His music has brought him across the US, Canada, and Europe playing venues ranging from intimate bars to large, prestigious music festivals.

DJ Williams is currently on a 26-night summer tour to support his latest solo album, By Way of RVA. This six-track EP was released on his own label, Projekt Records, this spring and is a love letter to Richmond, VA – a city that raised him musically. The album covers a lot of ground, fusing funk, rock, and soul, and showcases a more introspective side of his lyrical writing. In anticipation of his upcoming performance in Denver, DJ Williams stopped by the KUVO Studios to chat with Steve and me on The Morning Set. He shared his musical influences, touched upon the writing process for By Way of RVA, and talked about the music industry. You can listen to the conversation below!
