Ciudad Reina, in partnership with RedLine Contemporary Art Center, announces Una Historia de la Cumbia!, an engulfing evening filled with Cumbia history, dancing, and music from the pasado, presente y futuro.
Ciudad Reina, a Denver arts collaborative, was formed in 2022 to speak to Denver’s large and often overlooked Latine population, including them in the artistic heartbeat of this city. Taking its name from a Spanish translation of Denver’s nickname “Queen City of the Plains”, Ciudad Reina looks to bring musicians from all over the world into some of Denver’s favorite local haunts, simultaneously showing off the vibrant and thriving Latine neighborhoods throughout the city.
RedLine is a nonprofit arts organization in Denver, Colorado that fosters education and engagement between artists and communities to create positive social change.
Ciudad Reina presents Una Historia de la Cumbia!, a free event honoring the cultural giant that is the cumbia. Featuring 89.3 FM KUVO’s Super Sonido host La Molly and El Jaguar hailing from Oaxaca, MX, the night will kick off with an interactive historical overview of the cumbia, from its beginnings to today. Following the presentation, local cultural icon Magally Rizo Luna will lead a dance class to be followed by a cumbia party from 8-9 PM. Expect to be surprised and enchanted by music selections highlighting old favorites to bizarre and modern interpretations of everyone’s favorite rhythm, Cumbia!
Free for members, $5 suggested donation for non-members. This is a family-friendly event.
