Jazz Fan 101 with Allen Adinoff
Study the development of jazz and blues throughout the 20th Century

This course is designed for the jazz listener who would like to develop a deeper understanding of the music; its history, and the common language jazz musicians share, as a means of furthering the enjoyment of their listening and viewing experience. Together we will explore the history and evolution of jazz and blues, and develop a better understanding of the basic forms and structures of the music.

The course is designed to be a three-semester study to include:

—The history of jazz – beginning with the prehistory and ending with jazz in the new millennium, including its impact on, and reflection of the socio-political events occurring concurrently.

—We will study the basic forms and language including:

Basic blues format

Common formats of jazz standard tunes

Use of instrumentation in different jazz settings and how that evolved over time

Communication within the band – how do soloists know what to do?

—Materials: The History of Jazz by Ted Gioia

ALLEN ADINOFF is jazz drummer who may be heard playing with a number of groups in Denver including Jazz Peace and Kool Groove. His educational accomplishments include (but are not limited to) a BA in History from the University of Michigan, and a Graduate Certificate of Music with a Concentration in Jazz Studies from the Lamont
School of Music at the University of Denver.
