Jazz Piano: An Idiomatic Approach with Tom Amend

Techniques central to the jazz piano idiom including improvisation, accompaniment, voicing styles, and rhythm

Saturdays 11:45 am – 1:15 pm

This course, taught by Tom Amend, will approach techniques central to the jazz piano idiom including: improvisation, accompaniment, theory, technique, voicing styles, and rhythm, through in-depth analysis of the masters of this music. Students will be guided through an exploration of these concepts supplemented by written handouts/video materials/audio recordings. Each semester will focus on one well-known and one lesser-known pianist, comparing their playing styles. This first semester will compare and contrast the styles of Bud Powell and Sonny Clark.
