Epgomanegati – Blueberry Land, director Brian J. Francis (Mi’kmaq). The Mi’kmaq people have participated in the annual blueberry harvest in Maine for decades. Entire families would pack up and leave their reservations for five weeks each year to participate in the harvest. For many, it is a time to socialize with people from other First Nations communities. For most, it was a way to subsidize the coming year. It has become a new tradition the people have grown to love. In Mi’kmaq with English subtitles. (Brian J. Francis, 2022, 40 min.).

Preceded by:

A Rainbow to Turtle Island, director Robbie Tait Jr. (Mi’gmaq from Listuguj). This portrait introduces artist Robbie Tait Jr. and demonstrates the transformative power of art. He walks us through his Turtle Island Handbook project which arose from a desire to transmit his culture and family heritage through his drawings, and instill in the youth of his community a sense of pride in the power and strength of their culture. Robbie presents the political side of his art through his Rainbow Tears project, inspired by a story about political prisoner Leonard Peltier. (Wapikoni Mobile, 2022, 6 min.).

With Mi’kmaq elder and filmmaker Brian J. Francis joining us in the theater person to lead a conversation and Q&A.

Live showing at the Ricketson Theater.
