Su Teatro is bringing back a fan favorite for the holiday season, The Westside Oratorio, December 1 – 18, 2022. The Westside Oratorio is an original collaboration by Su Teatro Artistic Director Anthony J. Garcia and nationally known Musician/Composer Daniel Valdez. As part of the continued celebration of Su Teatro’s 50th Anniversary, the popular production will return to Denver’s Westside. This year’s production will once again be helmed by Anthony J Garcia, and Daniel Valdez, with support from Marialuisa Meza-Burgos, Su Teatro company member, vocalist, and Mariachi (Las Dahlias) as Vocal Director and local musician and Chicano Music Hall of Fame inductee Rudy Bustos (The Rudy Bustos Band) as Band Director.

The Westside Oratorio honors the Mexican-American community that was displaced by the destruction of the campus more than 40 years ago. It’s based on seven generations of Mexican-American that found their home in Denver’s Auraria neighborhood told through 13 original songs interspersed with monologues and vignettes. Auraria was one of the original communities, that was eventually annexed by Denver, and remained a strong Chicano neighborhood until the residents were displaced to build the Auraria Campus. The production itself premiered in 2004 at the King Center Concert Hall on the Auraria Campus.

The timing of the staging of this piece carries a certain irony. A community that was displaced by the campus has now find found a permanent home on 7th Avenue and Santa Fe Drive. Su Teatro and Cultural Performing Arts Center is a stone’s throw away from paying off the mortgage of the building. The building was purchased eleven years ago by the company and continues to be a place of belonging for many artists and patrons.
