“Once upon a time. Mexico. A hacienda far from anything. Winter.”

Su Teatro kicks off the 2023 season with Wolf at the Door, a stunning work by Marisela Treviño Orta. The play is directed by Micaela Garcia de Benavidez and will run from October 12-26.

Grimms Brothers’ fairy tale meets Aztec mythology, in search of a happily ever after. A Play Filled with Magic! A Warning We Cannot Ignore!

Fairy Tale Meets Latino Folklore! (For Adults!)

Mythical Trilogy: The play is the second in Treviño Orta’s trilogy dedicated to exploring contemporary themes in traditional folk tales.  Set “Once upon a time. Mexico. A hacienda far from anything. Winter.” The folktales chosen are a hybrid of stories in the Brothers Grimm tradition along with indigenous mythology.

Tickets may be purchased online at Su Teatro or by calling (303) 296-0219.

Director Mica Garcia de Benavidez has been an advocate for the work of Marisela’s work, having produced the regional premiere of the first story in the trilogy, The River Bride. Garcia de Benavidez has committed Su Teatro to be the first theater company in the country to stage the trilogy. She steps forward to direct after having co-directed last season’s mainstage production Return of the Barrio Moon.

Award-winning Playwright — Treviño Orta’s relationship with Su Teatro goes back to her first fully staged production Braided Sorrow, which tells the story of the disappearances and murders of the Women of Juarez. Braided Sorrow won the 2006 Chicano/Latino Literary Prize in Drama and won the 2009 PEN Center USA Literary Award in Drama.

Versatile Director — Mica Garcia de Benavidez wears multiple hats at Su Teatro, including Managing Director and Director of the Cultural Arts Education Institute (CAEI), but she is also a playwright and director. She has spent time directing the original work of the CAEI students and has directed Su Teatro in touring productions including Papi, Me and Cesar Chavez and Dancing with the Spirits, along with numerous rehearsed readings.  Last year, she co-directed Return of the Barrio Moon at Su Teatro’s Martinez Mainstage Theater,

“know when to open the door and when to lock the door.”

Trevino Orta’s poetry and assertion of the female voice bring compassion and pathos to the work. “These are fairy tales for adults to help them navigate the deep emotional waters they’re swimming in,” Treviño Orta said. “This is the darkest and probably most dangerous of them all. This is not for children.”

Powerful Female Voice — Like all good fairy tales, Wolf at the Door offers basic concepts of good and evil, but the subtextual conversation is deep and complicated. It speaks from a powerful place, wherein women speak and share. The dialogue belies a connection that is steeped in their historical battle to assert control over their lives, their spirituality, and their bodies.

Veteran Cast — The cast includes Su Teatro veterans Paolo Miranda (Papi, Me and Cesar Chavez, War of the Flowers) as Isadora, Magally Luna (Return of the Barrio Moon, War of the Flowers) as Rocio, Natalie Fuentes (Papi, Me and Cesar Chavez, Westside Oratorio) as Yolot, and Paul Zamora as Septimo (River Bride, War of the Flowers) and will include the Su Teatro resident production team of Arnold King (Tech and Lighting Director) and Steve Nash (Set Designer).

National Recognition — Wolf at the Door was part of the NNPN (National New Play Network) Rolling World Premiere initiative and debuted at the New Jersey Repertory Company in Long Branch, New Jersey on October 10, 2018. This was followed by premieres at Kitchen Dog Theater in Dallas, Texas on April 11, 2019, and at Milagro Theatre in Portland, Oregon on May 2, 2019.

Award-winning Playwright Treviño Orta’s relationship with Su Teatro goes back to her first fully staged production Braided Sorrow, which tells the story of the disappearances and murders of the Women of Juarez. Braided Sorrow won the 2006 Chicano/Latino Literary Prize in Drama and won the 2009 PEN Center USA Literary Award in Drama.
