Public safety, the Five Points Business Improvement District and the “Food, Jazz and Wine” event were all on the table this morning when Tracy Winchester, executive director of the Five Points Business District, visited “First Take with Lando and Chavis” with her monthly segment “Fridays on Five Points.”

Five Points business district met with police earlier in the month to identify the problem areas that had developed during the summer, particularly in the parking lots. “RTD stepped up and closed the parking lot (at 29th and Welton) between 12 midnight and 4:00 a.m.,” said Winchester.

Community concern is high after the slaying of 38-year-old Gerald Hammons  on Welton St. early last Sunday morning.  A police investigation is currently underway, and any information that can lead the police to a conviction could result in a reward $2,000.00  (All tips or info should be directed to Metro Denver Crime Stoppers.)

“The Five Points Business Improvement District is really going to be focused on maintenance of the sidewalks, as well as security and marketing,” Tracy informs us.   The Five Points Business Improvement District was created this May, but a vote must be cast to raise the local business tax on November 8.  Winchester says business improvement districts are found all around Colorado.

The Five Points Business District provides services such as a legal aid clinic, and a graffiti paint bank (free paint to fix graffiti on local businesses. More information on the Five Points Business District can be found at FivePointsBiz.org.
