You might say Colorado is at the center of the jazz universe this Tuesday when the two surviving members of Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet are both in Colorado. Ron Carter’s Golden Striker Trio opens a three-night stand at Dazzle at the Performing Arts Center and Herbie Hancock in a power quintet at Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder. Wow! Jazz venues in Denver are a story of give and take. We give up a venue, the New American restaurant Terra on 14th across from the Convention Center. Where, for nearly a year, Mark Diamond has hosted live jazz on Thursday nights. And with the status of Terra uncertain, the busy bassist has an opening on his dance card.  He can be reached at MarkDiamondMusic.

On the other hand, jazz is heard Wednesdays at the Roxy on South Broadway, and the Denver Jazz Scene Facebook Group posted an invitation to an open jam for all players at the Western Sky Bar and Taproom on South Broadway in Englewood on the 2nd and 4th Sundays. We’re working on a story about open mic sessions around town. Hit me up on the text line with your favorite open mic session. (SOURCE: Broadway Roxy) (SOURCE: Western Sky Bar)

Jazz is sprouting up in new places around Boulder County. The Thursday night live music series at R Gallery and Wine Bar in downtown Boulder features George Nelson, Barbara Paris and Dave Corbus through September at 2027 Broadway between Pearl and Spruce. (SOURCE: R Gallery)
