KUVO Jazz welcomes the Denver School of the Arts Combo, ‘Impulse’ to the Phyllis A. Greer Performance Studio on Thursday, April 5 at 3:15 to 4pm; their repertoire includes all Charles Mingus tunes. The Combo is Chris Ferrari – Sax and clarinet, Sam Keedy – Trombone, Alec Streete – Vibes, Tony Golden – Bass and Aleks Girshevich – Drums, all students who performed at the Essentially Ellington High School festival in New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick Rose stage last year, where they took second place in the national competition.

The combo will be competing at 10th Annual Charles Mingus High School Competition and Festival is held at the Newark, NJ campus of Rutgers University on April 20-23.  The program is overseen by Sue Mingus and features the incredible musicians that perform as part of the Mingus Big Band regularly at the Jazz Standard in New York City.  The competition will feature 6 combos and 6 big bands from schools all over the nation culled from hundreds of submissions.
