The Azucartones will be in KUVO’s Phyllis A. Greer Performance Studio on Tuesday, May 8 from 7pm to 8pm with host Geoff Anderson.

Wait a second. . .there’ s a school in Colorado with an AfroCuban band? I thought music funding was being cut in schools? You would think so, but the Azucartones is a young AfroCuban band based right here in Colorado.

They are part of the Downbeat award-winning Commercial Music Program at the Kent Denver School.  They pack the dance floor playing the music of Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Willie Colon, Fania All-Stars, and others.

Not just a group of kids but a band of practiced student musicians growing into professional musicians, the Azucartones have sold out Dazzle Jazz and been featured on local radio stations KUVO and KGNU. In March 2014, the band was able to travel to Havana, Cuba to perform and study with their Cuban peers at Havana’s renowned conservatories. In 2015, the band was recognized by Downbeat Magazine as the best high school Latin band in the country!
