We’ve added several performances to the April Music schedule. Jazz Appreciation Month finds us smack dab in the middle of Denver’s finest musicians. Talk about reason to celebrate!

Here’s the current line-up:

Weds. 4/9, 7pm – The Orchid Room Amy Darling – trumpet; Xavier Provencher – saxophones; Nate Leichtman – piano; Kim Bird – bass; Kevin Matthews – drums. The creme de la creme of Denver’s young straightahead Jazz community.

Thurs. 4/10, 4pm – The Jason Klobnak Quintet –  Jason Klobnak – trumpet; Elijah Samuels – tenor sax; Annie Booth – piano; Ian Hutchison – bass; Paul Mullikin – drums. The Klobnak Quintet is formed of graduates of the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver.  Their latest (and first) album, “Mountain, Move” was released last year.

Tues. 4/15, 7pm – Metro State University of Denver Jazz Ensemble – under the direction of Ron Miles

Fri. 4/18, 4pm – Björn Thoroddsen – solo guitar  A virtuosic player from Iceland, Mr. Thoroddsen is equally at home in Jazz, Blues, Folk and Rock styles.  He’s in town this month headlining Guitaramaat Swallow Hill on April 19th.

Sat. 4/19,12 noon – The Eric Gunnison Group – side players to be announced. Eric is a member of the Jazz faculty at DU’s LaMont School of music, leader of several projects, a member of Convergence, and a  former Carmen McRae accompanist

Wed. 4/23, 5pm – Tom Gershwin & Perry Smith  – Tom Gershwin – trumpet; Perry Smith – guitar Tom and Perry released an albums of duets, “Sweet Pastimes” on Dazzle Recordings in 2012.  NYC-based Perry is a member of the New West Guitar Group, performing at Dazzle (with Mr. Gershwin as special guest) at Dazzle on April 24. Tom is a Denver-based player with performs with the Legacy Jazz Orchestra, Soul Explosion, and many other groups.

Thurs. 4/24, 7pm – Jon Wirtz’s NuSkool – Jon Wirtz – piano & keyboards; Tyson Ailshie – bass; Daniel Hogans – drums  Jon Wirtz is an Ohio-raised, Denver-based player who has led a number of projects and has appeared with many groups. Fresh back from a midwestern tour in support of Jon’s latest album “Tourist”, Jon Wirtz plays Jazz trio music with a fresh and youthful feel.

Wed. 4/30, 5pm – The Rich Chiaraluce Quintet  Rich Chiaraluce – alto sax; Al Hood – trumpet; Dave Hanson – piano; Ken Walker – bass; Todd Reid – drums   Rich is a highly respected sideman and educator in town.  Most of his band comes from the Jazz faculty at DU’s Lamont School of Music (except for Todd, who teaches at CU-Denver)

Thurs. 4/30, 7pm- The Big Panic Big Band – Gary LeFrancois – drummer and leader Formerly known as the “Buddy Project Big Band”.  They specialize in charts and music made famous by the volcanic Buddy Rich Big Band and they feature many players who perform with the great Metropolitan and Ultraphonic Jazz Orchestras.
