Tune in on Monday, September 12 at noon for these New Music Monday highlights presented on Lunchtime! with Arturo Gómez. Wayne Shorter | Terri Lyne Carrington | Leo Genovese | Esperanza Spalding “Live At the Detroit Jazz Festival”
What will surely go down as one of the all-time best concert quartets release a portion of their amazing 2017 Detroit Jazz Festival performance that took place at the main stage, Carhartt Amphitheater to close out the 4-day festival known as the world’s largest free festival that takes place over the Labor Day Weekend in the Motor City. All 4 musicians are elated that this was recorded and now available for their fans around the globe to hear this sizzling show. Dr. Wayne Shorter says the following”: “This recording is going to be really important. With the mixture of people male and female, varying ethnicities and backgrounds-sometimes we did things that sound larger than the four of us!”

Bruce Barth Trio: “Dedication”
For his first album in 5 years, the gifted pianist and long-time educator at Philadelphia’s Temple University, Bruce Barth dedicated it to his piano heroes, police brutality victims, and his drummer of many years, the late Montez Coleman who passed away at only 48, just a few months after completing this, his final studio recording. In addition to Coleman, Barth has Vicente Archer on bass to hold down the swingin’ of Bruce at the piano and Montez’s exquisite drumming. One of the songs is “George’s Dance”, a dedication to Bruce’s neighbor whose optimism keeps things in perspective!

Joe McCarthy’s New York Afro Bop Alliance Big Band: “The Pan American Nutcracker Suite’
For their 3rd recording, band founder-drummer-composer-arranger decided to re-invent the “Nutcracker Suite’ into a multi-cultural and musical extravaganza! Joe McCarthy has always considered his group to be a jazz band that embraces the rhythms of the world. This latest entry to their discography is a shining example of that as there are not only Afro-Latino elements in their playing but also Arabian and Chinese influences as well. Among the numerous outstanding NYC-based musicians that make up the big band, Denver’s own and member of the Convergence ensemble, Mark Patterson is the lead trombonist.

Every Monday for the past 19 years starting at Noon, I debut the latest arrivals to the KUVO Jazz library, many of them are debuted ahead of their official release date. In addition to the music comments, I’ll provide a few tidbits about the artist in particular if it’s a new or up-and-coming artist.
