Hear new music from The Renewal Jazz Trio, Joey Alexander, and Hays Street Hart when you tune in to New Music Monday on October 9 at noon with Arturo Gómez on Lunchtime!

The Renewal Jazz Trio: “Cantaloupe Island”
Denver’s very own vibraphonist Dave Atkinson and pianist Eric Gunnison have worked together for many years on recordings and on stage. With the addition of the incredible bassist Gonzalo Teppa, the Renewal Jazz Trio was born! “Cantaloupe Island” not only includes the title track it has five other selections taken from the jazz cannon but with refreshing new arrangements. Curiously, Dave began his career as a drummer and like most vibes players he converted to the vibraphone when on a New Year’s Eve over 45 years ago he found an abandoned vibraphone in storage and began playing it right away leading to letting go of the drum sticks and using the mallets to create music! We’re pleased he did!!

Joey Alexander: “Continuance”
The Indonesian piano phenom Joey Alexander has been around for over 7 years, he is now considered a seasoned player yet, he is only 20 years old! Joey has twice played live for KUVO Jazz, once at our former location on Welton St in Five Points and in our new location in the Ball Park neighborhood. His newest recording once again only features Joey’s original music. The grandson of the legendary trumpeter, Doc Cheatham, Theo Crocker who is a Grammy® nominee appears on 4 of the 7 tracks. The youngster Alexander not only plays piano, but he also plays the Fender Rhodes and the Mellotron accompanied by his frequent band mates, Kris Fun on the bass and John Davis on the drums.

Hays Street Hart: “Bridges”
Kevin Hays-piano, Ben Street-bass and Billy Hart-drums first played together in an empty Smoke jazz club in Manhattan during the pandemic to stay sharp, the sound engineer liked what he heard so much, he asked the trio to record their playing and they released the album: “All Things Are” which became one of the most acclaimed recordings of 2021. Due to that well received album, the trio decided to make another recording. The title represents how well the 3 play together bridging the 3 generations they represent, the youngster Ben, the middle-aged Kevin and the elder statesman, Billy. In 2022, veteran drummer Billy Hart entered the NEA Jazz Masters Hall of Fame. In 2019 Kevin teamed up with Steve Gass and they garnered A Grammy® for their album; “Spring Song.”

Now in its 21st year of debuting the latest arrivals to the KUVO Jazz library, many of them are played ahead of their official release date. In addition to the music comments, I’ll provide a few tidbits about the artist, if it’s a new or an up-and-coming artist. It all begins at Noon every Monday.
