This Sunday, September 16, KUVO celebrates the birth of piano virtuoso Henry Butler (born September 21, 1949) by playing recordings from his many performances in the Phyllis A. Greer Performance Studio.

Butler, who died on July 2, 2018, of complications from end-stage cancer, was beloved at KUVO.  We were privileged to be a “radio refuge” of sorts for the New Orleans resident who relocated to Colorado after Hurricane Katrina.  In February 2006, he performed in trio format with bassist Ken Walker and drummer Rudy Royston.  Later that year, he performed solo on a Bösendorfer piano.  In 2007, KUVO hosted another solo piano performance (The man needed to play! Who are we to say no?!), and later that year, he put together “The KUVO Big Room All-Stars,” a quintet with Walker, Paul Bollenback on guitar, Ricky Woodard on tenor sax and Paul Romaine on drums.  And in 2010, he played an unforgettable house concert with a full band in Colorado’s mountains.

Tune in to “On Stage” for a birthday tribute to the one and only Henry Butler, rebroadcast from live radio performances in KUVO’s Phyllis A. Greer Performance Studio and around Colorado.  That’s this Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m.  “On Stage,” a KUVO exclusive!
