This Sunday, October 1, at 4 p.m., KUVO’s performance series “On Stage” features legendary saxophonist-flutist David “Fathead” Newman in quintet format with special guests Craig Handy and Ron Blake.

KUVO’s Carlos Lando and Andy O’Leary were stage-side at the Vail Jazz Party in 2000 when Newman and crew took the bandstand. The audience was fired up to welcome a player of Newman’s stature.

By the turn of the millennium, Newman was already celebrated for his early work with Ray Charles, and for his solo projects. Considered one of the leading “Texas Tenors” of his era, Newman’s touch on the flute was pure and powerful, at the same time! The Vail engagement came at the beginning of his time with High Note Records.

Newman’s band: Mark Whitfield-guitar, Eric Reed-piano, Dwayne Burno-bass, and Carl Allen-drums.  And the sparks really flew when reed men Craig Handy and Ron Blake joined Newman.

Catch “On Stage,” every Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. only on KUVO Jazz.
