This Sunday, February 18, at 4 p.m., KUVO’s performance series “On Stage” features trumpeter Hugh Ragin!

Called “a strikingly gifted post-bop trumpeter” by AllAboutJazz.com, Hugh Ragin has a long list of credits and associations, from the avant-garde of Roscoe Mitchell and Anthony Braxton to celebrated series of collaborations with David Murray and Fred Wesley.  A director of the Colorado Jazz Workshop and on the music faculty in the Denver Public School system, Ragin says “technique include the knowledge of the instrument as well as knowledge of the language.”

In the middle of the last decade, Ragin brought a couple of different ensembles to KUVO for live broadcasts.  Under the moniker “Hugh Ragin’s Latin Soul Express,” Ragin along with a mysterious pianist “José Bonner,” bassist Jimmy Trujillo and drummer Mike Marlier gave a south-of-the-border flavor to some jazz classics.  In May of 2007, in a quartet with vibraphonist Greg Harris, bassist Brian Wilson and percussionist Frank Ayala, Ragin unpacked a few originals, plus the Miles classic “So What.”

Tune in to “On Stage” as we enjoy local trumpet hero and music educator Hugh Ragin, in sessions played back for you as they were broadcast LIVE from KUVO’s Phyllis A. Greer Performance Studio.  That’s this Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m.  “On Stage,” a KUVO exclusive!
