KUVO will be recreating an historic jazz photo called “A Great Day in Harlem” during the Five Points Jazz Festival this Saturday, May 21.

The legendary black-and-white photo was taken in front of a New York City brownstone on August 12, 1958 and featured 57 of that era’s great jazz musicians. The photo was published in Esquire magazine in January, 1959. Saxophone player Sonny Rollins was in the photo that day – one of two musicians still surviving — and will be honored during this 2016 photo recreation. Everyone is invited to participate but KUVO asks that people wear Sonny Rollins apparel if possible. Those wearing Sonny Rollins apparel or holding LPs, CDs, posters or other Sonny memorabilia will be given preferred placement. Rollins is the featured artist on KUVO’s 2016 membership T-shirts and jackets, and KUVO memberships and radio station gear will be available for purchase at the KUVO booth on Welton Street as part of the Five Points Jazz Festival.

The photo will be taken on the steps of the Five Points Media Center, located on the corner of Welton and 29th streets, at 4:15pm.

For more information about this photo opportunity, or for festival performance schedules, go to kuvo.org/post/five-points-jazz-2016. Join us in capturing for posterity Five Points’ love of jazz and help us tip our hats to the extraordinary Sonny Rollins!
